This session is part of an eight week ECHO series focusing on ethical matters surrounding the care of persons living with dementia to improve quality of life and better support healthcare professionals.
This series is open to any and all persons who provide direct or indirect care for persons living with dementia and their families in any care setting or home and community-based services.

Week 4 – Paige Wolk – Navigating Ethical Choices: Ensuring Safety and Autonomy for Older Adults Living Alone
Topic Description:
Week 4 will cover safety and autonomy for older adults living alone to encourage a higher quality of life and reduce risks to their well-being, which will include discussion of fundamental values such as freedom, independence, and mobility.
Learning Objectives:
- By the end of this session, learners will be able to…
- Identify the fundamental values of freedom, independence, and mobility crucial for older adults living alone.
- Discuss strategies and considerations for enhancing home safety to promote a higher quality of life and reduce risks.
- Identify and evaluate appropriate living environments that balance autonomy with necessary support for older adults.
- Explore the ethical implications of decision-making regarding driving privileges and its impact on older adults’ independence and community engagement.
- Incorporate the four pillars of medical ethics (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice) into the discussion to guide ethical decision-making processes effectively.
